The New Direction of Modern Dance

Updated: Apr 29

By Ruslan Zhyvokorintsev

Modern dance is changing. Today, it is no longer limited by one style, one technique, or one tradition. It is becoming a universal language where different forms - breaking, contemporary, commercial, and street dance - exist together and influence each other.

When I began my career, dance styles were more separated. Ballet was ballet. Breaking was breaking. Contemporary dance had its own space. Today, these borders are disappearing. The strongest dancers are those who can combine technique with individuality, structure with freedom, and discipline with personal expression.

One of the most important shifts I see is the rise of dancers as complete artists, not just performers. Modern dancers must understand movement, musicality, stage presence, and creative intention. It is no longer enough to execute choreography - you must bring meaning and identity to every performance.

Breaking, in particular, has had a major influence on modern choreography. Its inclusion in the Olympic Games confirmed its technical and athletic value, but its artistic influence is equally important. Breaking introduced a new level of control, dynamics, and authenticity that is now shaping contemporary stage work.

Another important direction is the focus on individuality. Audiences today are not looking for identical performers. They are looking for presence, character, and authenticity. The dancer’s personality has become part of the choreography itself.

As a choreographer and artistic director, my goal is to develop dancers who are not limited by one style. I focus on building strong technical foundations while encouraging dancers to discover their own artistic voice. The future belongs to dancers who can adapt, evolve, and create.

Modern dance continues to move forward. It reflects the world we live in - dynamic, diverse, and constantly evolving. And for those who are willing to grow, experiment, and push beyond limits, this is one of the most exciting times to be a dancer.
